Federal Budget Includes Funding for Northern Wisconsin Ski Area

Mount Ashwabay is a small ski area near Bayfield, Wisconsin. For decades, it's been a family destination. More recently, it's been home to the Big Top Chautaqua's 70 live performances each season. The owner of land wants to sell to a non-profit group dedicated to carrying on these traditions. Now, it looks like the Federal government will come to the rescue.

Wisconsin Congressman David Obey says the next federal budget includes nearly $1 million to preserve public access to the land. Obey, from Wausau, says the mney will help the Mount Ashwabay Outdoor Education Foundation buy the 60 acre ski hill south of Bayfield on Wisconsin 13. The deal also includes 140 acres of forested land around the hill. The 281-acre Nourse Sugarbush, which runs near s ski trail, will also be preserved.
