Wildfire and Your Cabin - Reducing the Risk

The ice is gone and soon Johnson Lake will be buzzing with activity. The Wisconsin DNR wants everyone to know how to minimize fire danger. Property owners have received a pamphlet covering everything from burning permits to fireworks and landscaping tips.

Fireworks: The DNR says the sale and use of fireworks in April and May is a dangerous, disturbing trend. Fireworks cause more than 32,000 fires a year across the country. The DNR says fireworks that leave the ground or explode into pieces may not be possessed or used without a permit. Firecrackers, bottle rockets and roman candles are restricted and require a permit from the Village President. The permit must state when and where the fireworks will be used. If a fire starts because of your fireworks, you may be liable for firefighting costs and damages.

Burning Permits: Burning leaf and brush piles or grass requires a permit anytime the ground is not snow-covered. The permits are free. Without one, you could be fined. For more information about burn permits contact the DNR's Webster office at 715-866-8201. Debris burning is the leading cause of fires in the Wisconsin woodlands.

The DNR has plotted more than 1,500 human-caused fires in Wisconsin in 2005. Follow the link and take a look at Burnett County. You'll see a large number of fire locations.
