Volunteers Needed for Battle Against Milfoil, Other Invasive Species

Experts say it's only a matter of time before Eurasian Milfoil spreads across Wisconsin lakes. We can delay, or perhaps prevent the spread of this nasty, aggressive weed to Johnson Lake by joining the Clean Boats, Clean Waters watercraft inspection program. JLPOA members have an excellent opportunity to educate themselves in June.

The Wisconsin DNR, UW Extension and county land and water conservation departments are hosting a training workshop on Saturday, June 19th at the Burnett County Government Center in Siren. You'll learn how and where invasive species are most likely to hitch a ride into water bodies and how to perform watercraft inspections. The program runs from 9a.m. until noon. The cost of the workshop is $25 and preregistration is required. Participants receive a handbook and resource kit containing educational materials, a video, invasive species identification cards, watercraft inspection stickers and t-shirts which can be worn during watercraft inspections.

For more information, contact Dave Blumer, the Wisconsin DNR Exotics Specialist for our area, at 715-635-4078. For registration and directions, contact John Haack, UWEX Natural Resources Basin Educator, at john.haack@ces.uwex.edu or 715-635-7406. Registration is limited t 25 participants, so call early.

Additional workshops are set for Saturday July 10th in Phillips, WI and Saturday July 17th at the DNR Service Center in Hayward, but why wait? Every successful inspection we carry out reduces the risk that Zebra mussels and Eurasian Milfoil gain footholds in Johnson Lake.
