JLPOA Volunteers Expand Water Quality Testing Effort

By Roy Hansen

On Sunday afternoon Dave Bloomer from the DNR in Spooner gave us the training for the new procedures for the lake sampling for this year.  Those who attended were as follows:  John Okerstrom, Dick Golding, Bob Polkinghorn, Jerry Nelson, and myself.

New this year is as follows:  The temperature profile will be done with a probe on a cable with a digital readout which makes this task much easier.  The phosphorous testing will be done at both the surface and at the bottom opposed to just surface test.  Also we are now doing a dissolved oxygen test at 5 different levels(top, bottom and 3 in between).

We went out and got the temp profile completed and here are the results.

Depth Temperature
Surface 51.2
3ft 50.7
6ft 50.5
9ft 50.5,
12ft 50.3
15ft 50.1
18ft 50.1
21ft 50.0

The secchi was 11.5ft.  We only got the dissolved oxygen at the surface as the weather turned bad and it was 8 which is very good.  The dissolved oxygen is done on a scale of 1 to 10 with anything below 3 not able to sustain life.
