Lake Level Falls as Dry Summer Wears On
High fire danger and low lake water are both facts
of life this summer at Johnson Lake. The water level is down significantly from
springtime, when many people installed their docks. The lower water level means
weeds are visible at the surface where they have not been in previous years.
Beaches are much bigger too -- but naturalists will advise you to avoid the
temptation to rake them clean and smooth. Read more to see some evidence of the
low water.

Wisconsin DNR Addresses Fish Virus Threat in Open Letter
Dear Wisconsin conservationists, anglers, boaters and
lake stewards:
Viral hemorrhagic
septicemia virus, or VHS, was found last weekend in Little Lake Butte des Morts
in Winnebago County. We have subsequently had seven samples from Lake
Winnebago test positive for the disease. VHS is a serious threat to our
fisheries and to Wisconsin’s $2.3 billion fishing industry. Although
we’ve been preparing for its discovery here for some time, we’ve had
to act swiftly and comprehensively this week to curb any possible spread to
other inland waters.

Water Quality Declining
The results are in from the lake samples taken last
summer. There is both good news and bad news, according to Roy Hansen. Read more
for details, plus a photo of one type of pollution that's out of our control,
but does affect the lake.

STOP THE SPREAD - A Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species in Northwest
Wisconsin.
"The spread of aquatic invasive species is literally
costing the taxpayers millions of dollars in degradation of plant, wildlife and
fish species, impairment of natural habitat and the lowering of property values
on both waterways and on land." That's a mouthful, but environmental experts say
now is the time to be proactive about Eurasian Millfoil and other invasive
species. They've organized a workshop in April to educate anyone who will invest
the time to listen.

Federal Budget Includes Funding for Northern Wisconsin Ski Area
Mount Ashwabay is a small ski area near Bayfield,
Wisconsin. For decades, it's been a family destination. More recently, it's been
home to the Big Top Chautaqua's 70 live performances each season. The owner of
land wants to sell to a non-profit group dedicated to carrying on these
traditions. Now, it looks like the Federal government will come to the
rescue.

Clear Cutting Scars Land Near Johnson Lake
Living near a managed pine forest can be a blessing
and a curse. For the better part of two decades, it's been a blessing. Now, a
decision to clear cut a large plot of land reveals the flip side of this type of
forestry. Some of this land had been covered in oak and other species.
Elsewhere, pine trees scratched the
sky.
Click
the read more button to see what's left of a pine forest near County Road C and
Veit Drive on the Northwest corner of the lake. We can only hope the land owner
sees fit to clean up the mess and replant the land. Otherwise, we're certain to
see scrub brush return and nature take many decades to restore the damage done.
In the meantime, the creatures which inhabited the forest are left to scramble
for cover and new places to inhabit. This type of forestry also causes
significant erosion problems.In
addition to the pictures, we've provided links to information on other ways to
manage stands of pine, which many Johnson Lake properties have. As DNR experts
have told JLPOA members in the past, it is important to property manage pine and
other trees on your land.

Burnett Sentinel Documents Start of Milfoil Invasion in Burnett
County
SPOONER-The discovery of Eurasion Water Milfoil
(EWM) in Burnett's Ham and Round Lakes is bad news. The invasive plant is a
tough customer and expensive (almost impossible) to eradicate. Ask landowners on
Loon Lake in Shawano County. EWM had infested the lake to the point that boats
put in at the public launch could not get into the lake. The ropy weed wrapped
up on the propeller and would stop it. The lake association tried the old tried
and true 2,4D on their invasion. It failed.

Seaplanes and Eurasian Milfoil - A Response From The Seaplane Pilots
Association
Boats aren't the only way Eurasian Milfoil can be
transferred from lake to lake. In the interest of education, JLPOA Board Member
and seaplane pilot Fred Weber suggested that we share an email discussion by the
President of the Seaplane Pilots Association. The response from Dave Blumer,
Wisconsin DNR, is also enlightening.

Volunteers Needed for Battle Against Milfoil, Other Invasive Species
Experts say it's only a matter of time before
Eurasian Milfoil spreads across Wisconsin lakes. We can delay, or perhaps
prevent the spread of this nasty, aggressive weed to Johnson Lake by joining the
Clean Boats, Clean Waters watercraft inspection program. JLPOA members have an
excellent opportunity to educate themselves in June.
