JLPOA Board Approves Guardian Program, Asks Your HelpThe Johnson Lake Property Owners Association Board
of Directors voted on Saturday to go forward with the guardian program, which
includes electronic surveillance of the public boat landing as well as a new
sign encouraging the boating public to do their part to protect the lake from
invasive species, including eurasian millfoil. The current sign at the boat
landing is essentially bare, except for a very small sticker, which you can see
to the right of this
story.

2006
Dear Johnson Lake Property Owner: I am writing this letter to inform you of a serious matter that we must address relative to the health of our lake and the value of our respective properties. As you are probably aware, both Ham and Round Lake here In Burnett County have been contaminated with Eurasian milfoil. We cannot allow this to happen to our lake. The devastation is not only in the use and quality of the lake itself but also may seriously impact the value of our properties. One estimate states the introduction of milfoil can reduce the value of a foot of frontage by $600. (e.g. a 200 foot parcel at $1200 a foot would be worth $240,000 but only $120,000 if our lake was infected with milfoil, zebra mussels or other undesirable aquatics. We cannot allow this to happen on Johnson Lake! At our annual meeting of Johnson Lake Property Owners on June 24 a sub-committee was created for the sole purpose of creating a plan of action to combat milfoil and other exotic species brought in by boat and other watercraft before they infest Johnson Lake. A $5,000 budget was approved by members at the meeting to execute this plan. The Johnson Lake By-laws state that dues are $10.00 per year and can be raised to $20.00 by holding a special meeting and vote. The sub-committee therefore has established a voluntary "Johnson Lake Guardian Program" which was approved by the JLPOA Board of Directors at the July 22nd Board meeting. We are asking all property owners to please contribute $75.00 to start the Program. We are also applying for a state grant for the next two years which, if approved, will cover a significant portion of our expense. We can summarize our plan as follows: 1. The establishment of signage at the landing which will specifically require all launches to adequately clean their boats and trailers of weeds 2. The installation of an electronic video surveillance system that will capture pictures of all launches and identify boat numbers, license plates and presence of weeds. This will be monitored and any infraction reported to respective authorities. 3. The development of an ongoing monitoring system and rapid response plan if we find any undesired aquatics in our lake. We are exploring the utilization of an intern program that is currently being utilized by the DNR as a monitoring mechanism. Since the boat landing is the property of the Township of Oakland we have requested and have received permission for the installation of the monitoring device and signage at their last Board Meeting. Thank you for your assistance and consideration. We must be proactive on this issue. In the mail you will receive this letter and a form for sending in your $75. We also hope you can attend our Johnson Lake Social at the landing on Sat. July 29th from 4 to 6 pm.
