Thanks to Volunteers Who Give Their Time To Protect Johnson Lake

Thanks to the many volunteers who give an hour or two of their time by monitoring boats entering Johnson Lake at the public landing. Volunteers ask the boat owners whether they've visited other lakes recently, inspect the boat and trailer for weeds and teach the boater about the importance of being vigilant about invasive species.

Overflight Results to be Presented at JLPOA Annual Meeting June 2

If you were around on October 31st of 2006, you might have noticed a plane very much like Fred Weber’s amphibian circling our lake several times. That was Alan W. Cibuzar of A.W.R.L., Inc., who, at the behest of your Board of Directors, photographed the entire lakeshore using standard and Near-Infrared photography. The purpose of his mission was to obtain information for us in order to assist us in determining, among other things, why our lake clarity has gone steadily downhill! (Having been apprised of this effort, many of you contributed your hard earned funds in order to pay for Mr. Cibuzar’s efforts!)

Guardian Monitor In Operation for Fishing Opener 2007

The JLPOA Guardian boat monitoring station was installed this spring - just in time for the fishing opener. The system is part educational and part enforcement. It's designed to encourage boaters to check their boats and trailers for Eurasian Millfoil and other invasive species before entering the water. Eurasian Millfoil has already been found in other lakes in the area. It takes just one small plant fragment to transfer the weed to Johnson Lake. It can quickly take over native species and chemical control is very, very expensive. Read more for details and for more pictures.

2006 Water Samples Confirm Reason for Concern

Roy Hansen says water quality testing for the season has been completed. Five samples were taken between may and October. The tests measure water clarity, water temperature at 3-foot intervals, phosphorous content, chlorophyll content and dissolved oxygen. Click "Read More" to learn what we do - and don't - know about our water quality right now.

These Secchi disk images are from a great NASA page on lake water quality. Click the link if you want to explore it.

Guardian Programs Move Forward Thanks to Member Support

By now, members of the JLPOA should have received the Fall 2006 newsletter. In the President's Report, John Okerstrom says, "this has been a very busy six months for your Association." Among the accomplishments, the Association applied for and received a DNR grant for the boat monitoring station at the public access. The Association is also moving forward with an aerial analysis of potential pollution sources contributing to a decline in water quality.
