Entry Fees Considered for Apostle Islands

The people who run Wisconsin's only national park are considering charging user fees a few years from now.

The Apostle Islands are 21 jewels just off the coast of Bayfield, Wisconsin. 200,000 people visit the Islands every year, by ferry boat, pleasure boat or kayak. Chief Planner Jim Nepstad says user fees for overnight docking and other things are being considered as a way to generate money to maintain the park and its eight lighthouses. The Associated Press reports 80 percent of the money generated by camping reservation fees now are returned to the park. The new fees would not take effect until 2007 at the earliest.
