Recent Burnett Burglaries Reported

The Inter-County Leader reports more than a half-dozen burglaries in Burnett County as October begins. No lake home is burglar-proof, but property owners can take steps to minimize the risk of break-ins. Start by thinking like a burglar.

The Leader reports that the burglars stole everything from ATVs to electronics and fishing gear. So far, the incidents do not appear related and no arrests have been reported. Read more about the recent burglaries here.

As for minimizing the risk to your property, law enforcement experts say it's important to think like a burglar. What are the easiest ways to enter your home or cabin? Can the burglar easily see things worth taking by looking through windows? Are "burglar helpers" like tools and ladders left outside your cabin? Will motion-detecting lights let anyone approaching your home know that someone may be inside? Dead-bolt locks and sliding door locks may also slow down a casual burglar. Security alarms and signs alerting people to them can also help your cause, though fairly frequent electrical outages can cause false alarms.

Beyond that, do you know your neighbors? If they notice something unusual on your property, do they know how to contact you? People who live full-time at the lake can be your eyes and ears when you're away. Consider sharing a home or office phone number, or an email address with them. They can call the sheriff first, then you, if there's trouble. (You can reach the Burnett County Sheriff's department at 715-349-2121.)

Police and insurance experts also recommend keeping an inventory of your possessions. Engrave or mark valuables in a way that can be used to prove ownership. Photographs and video records can be additional proof. You can keep copies of your inventory list and receipts in a safe deposit box or with a friend. Last, be sure you have the right coverage. You may need to purchase additional insurance policies to protect special items like expensive jewelry or rare antiques.

No cabin will ever be 100% burglar-proof, but taking a few simple precautions can minimize your risk.
