Red Hat Event Goes to the Dogs

They might have wished their red hats were fur-lined, but about a dozen members of two Webster-area Red Hat Society chapters had a ball riding through the woods on a dogsled in late January.

Members of the Les Chapeau Rouge and Classie Lassies bundled up for their adventure at Paw-Tuck-A-Way kennels north of Danbury. Three members of the Les Chapeau Rouge chapter live on Johnson Lake: Sharon Okerstrom, Joan Golding and Sheri Nelson.

Kennel Owner Cliff Maxfield harnessed up a lead dog and three others and took two ladies at a time on exhilarating mile-long rides through the woods. Red Hat Society member Sharon Okerstrom says the women enjoyed hot cider around a campfire while they waited for their turns on the sled.  The weather may have been a bit warm for the dogs, but was perfect for the people, with sunny skies and about 35 degrees. When the rides ended, the women celebrated their wonderful day with lunch at The Embroidery Shop in Danbury. Each plate was garnished with a milk bone.

Paw-Tuck-A-Way is home to about 40 animals, including Siberian Huskies and Alaskan sled dogs. Kennel operator Cliff Maxfield says the dogs eat about $90 worth of specially-blended dog food and chicken each week. They love to burn off those calories by pulling and running as fast as the musher lets them. Maxfield offers a hands-on approach. Guests may help harness the dogs and do a little mushing if they wish.
