Project Loon Watch - Two Babies Spotted

The nesting loons are proud parents of two fuzzy babies. Dick Golding says they hatched a day apart, just before Father's Day weekend.

We understand the eagles got the first eggs. The loons managed to protect two replacement eggs until they hatched. The parents are busy feeding their youngsters a diet of small fish. They'll have to grow quickly. The delay in hatching means they have less time to grow and learn to fly before the lake freezes over in the fall. Let's hope for a late freeze! The photo below was taken early on June 21st. The loons didn't seem to mind the photographer as he stood motionless in a drifting boat. All of the loons started calling when the eagles flew overhead.

Feeding time. First come, first served!
