December Thaw Arrives With Christmas Week, 2005

The late-December thaw was a present for anyone paying heating bills, but put a damper on outdoor fun during Christmas week.

Normally, the sound of snowmobiles buzzing across the lake would be common on Christmas week. This year, a December thaw put an end to that, for all but the most die-hard snowmobilers.

The water-covered ice wasn't much good for skating, though a few rinks had been built around the lake. Fortunately, the ice was thick enough for some ice fishing. My dog Ruby couldn't wait for the flag on the tip-up to rise and a fish to emerge from the hole.
