About The Photo of the Month - May 2004

Without wanting to boast too much, we're very pleased to say that the May photo of the month is an award winner and it puts Johnson Lake into the spotlight.

This photo, entitled "Great Blue Heron and Golden Wildflowers" recently won a First Place prize in the 26th annual Wisconsin Lakes Convention photo contest. Amateur photographer Jon Okerstrom entered the photo and two others in the "natural features around and in lakes or under water" category. According to contest rules, the photos were judged on visual impact, technical merit and composition.

In a letter to Jon, Program Assistant Sally Marchel Handrich wrote, "Your pictures were a huge success at the 26th Annual Lakes Convention 2004. You won 1st Place ... Congrats!"

We don't yet know the total number of entries, but one of Jon's photos was number 59. Jon says, "I'm very pleased and honored to win this prize from an organization that shares my love of the Wisconsin wilderness. Protecting natural shoreline is not only vital for today's wildlife, including the Great Blue Heron in my photo; it's the best way to protect and preserve our lakes for future generations. If sharing my photos helps others see the value in that, I'm all for it."

The next Lakes Convention is scheduled for April 28-30, 2005. Click here for more information about the Wisconsin Association of Lakes and the Wisconsin Lakes Partnership .
