Baby Loons Grow Quickly on Steady Diet of Fish

All eyes are on a pair of baby loons, now about the size of fluffy tennis balls. Both birds appear to be offspring of one nesting pair. Read more to see one of the first photos of the year of these cute little guys.

They're about the same size and growing fast after being born on June 21st. Often, one baby is born a few days behind the other and has to fight harder for food. Fortunately, small fish are plentiful on Johnson Lake. At this point, their wings are tiny and their eyes haven't turned red.

They have no idea, but they're in a race against mother nature. By the time the ice arrives, they'll have to be ready to fly away for their first winter in the open ocean.

When you see the loon family, please approach quietly and with caution. We don't want to disturb our favorite feathered family on the lake. We should add that this photo was taken with a very, very long lens and the birds didn't seem to mind a bit.
