After years of brown Christmas celebrations, Johnson
Lake is a wintry wonderland. The snowmobile trails are great, however as of
Christmas, the snow covered a layer of water on the ice. Apparently the weight
of all that snow is pushing down on the ice. A few frigid nights should solve
the problem.
Thanks to Volunteers Who Give Their Time To Protect Johnson Lake
Thanks to the many volunteers who give an hour or
two of their time by monitoring boats entering Johnson Lake at the public
landing. Volunteers ask the boat owners whether they've visited other lakes
recently, inspect the boat and trailer for weeds and teach the boater about the
importance of being vigilant about invasive species.
High fire danger and low lake water are both facts
of life this summer at Johnson Lake. The water level is down significantly from
springtime, when many people installed their docks. The lower water level means
weeds are visible at the surface where they have not been in previous years.
Beaches are much bigger too -- but naturalists will advise you to avoid the
temptation to rake them clean and smooth. Read more to see some evidence of the
low water.
Eurasian Milfoil isn't the only invasive weed to
worry about. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture today released information
on the potential threat from hydrilla. Read more to see the release from state
officials.

Baby Loons Absent, Birders Search for Other Friends
The loons have apparently failed to hatch any young
this season, much to the disappointment of loon watchers across the lake.
However, one JLPOA member did snap a photo of another photogenic feathered
friend
Overflight Results to be Presented at JLPOA Annual Meeting June 2
If you were around on October 31st
of 2006, you might have noticed a plane very much like Fred Weber’s
amphibian circling our lake several times. That was Alan W. Cibuzar of
A.W.R.L., Inc., who, at the behest of your Board of Directors, photographed the
entire lakeshore using standard and Near-Infrared photography. The purpose
of his mission was to obtain information for us in order to assist us in
determining, among other things, why our lake clarity has gone steadily
downhill! (Having been apprised of this effort, many of you contributed
your hard earned funds in order to pay for Mr. Cibuzar’s
efforts!)
